Caroline Joyce presents at the 11th European Organisation for Treatment of Trophoblastic Diseases Meeting in Warsaw

Caroline Joyce, Clinical Biochemist and PhD Student, recently presented her work on the use of capillary blood collection for human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) analysis in early pregnancy at the 11th European Organisation for Treatment of Trophoblastic Diseases (EOTTD) Meeting.
The meeting was hosted at the Medical University of Warsaw from 11-12 May 2023 and was attended by clinical oncologists, gynaecologists, biochemists and specialist nurses working with this rare disease.
The pregnancy hormone hCG is currently used as a biomarker for Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (GTD) (also known as molar pregnancy) during monitoring and treatment. Through her PhD studies, Caroline aims to identify more sensitive biomarkers for GTD to allow earlier detection of disease recurrence and progression to malignant diseases.
Caroline’s PhD is funded by the Irish Research Council: Employment-Based Programme, in partnership with HSE South. It is supervised by Professor Keelin O’Donoghue, Dr John Coulter (Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Cork University Maternity Hospital) and Professor Tommie McCarthy (School of Biochemistry & Cell Biology, UCC).
