Outline

To enable students develop and expand their knowledge and skills of adult orthopaedic nursing role in caring for individuals with various traumatic orthopaedic conditions.

Learning outcomes

  • Enhance  orthopaedic  trauma nurse practice through the application of theoretical, practical and policy knowledge and clinical skills.
  • Exercise accountability within the clinical, ethical and professional boundaries of the role of orthopaedic nursing.
  • Critically appraise and evaluate current research evidence and best practice for  orthopaedic  trauma nursing and its implications for practice.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of individual outcomes against specialist intervention plans for individuals and families in orthopaedic  trauma  nursing.
  • Synthesise health related issues for the development of intervention/service responses appropriate to the needs of individuals and families in orthopaedic  trauma nursing.
  • Contribute as a learned member of the multidisciplinary team in the delivery of quality healthcare for individuals and families within the context of orthopaedic trauma nursing.
  • Act as a means of professional support, educator and role model for the provision of life long learning to ensure ongoing professional development.

Teaching Method: 200 hours Estimated Student Workload (Discussion Board Preparation and Participation, Required Reading, Attendance at Workshops in the School, Assignment Preparation and Submission, Self-Directed Learning).

Requirements

This module is open to Registered Health Care Professionals in Nursing, Midwifery, Medicine, and Clinical Therapies or other allied disciplines.

Applicants must be practising health care professionals with evidence of current registration with the relevant professional regulatory body (e.g. the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI), the Irish Medical Council, the Health & Social Care Professions Council (or equivalent regulatory body for pharmacists, occupational therapist, podiatrists, speech and language therapists etc.)) or be eligible for such registration.

Candidates who have not undertaken a programme of study at National Framework of Qualifications academic level 7 (Degree, Diploma or equivalent) must satisfy the university/college that they have the ability to complete the module. The module coordinator will recommend such applicants on the basis of prior learning, professional study and general study undertaken in the previous five-year period.

Applicants who are under 23 years of age must satisfy the minimum entry requirements as for the Degrees in Nursing, as set out here

Admission to the module(s) will be subject to internal university approval processes on the recommendation of the Head of School.

These modules will not necessarily run unless minimum recruitment targets of 10 students are achieved. Students will be encouraged to take one or two modules per annum to a maximum of 20 credits.

Fees and Costs

The fee for this module is €1.000. There is also a €35 application fee.
