University College Cork awards 1845 Foundation Medal to Dr Michael Dowling
- UCC honours distinguished alumnus Dr Michael Dowling for outstanding leadership, innovation and service to healthcare.
University College Cork (UCC) has awarded its 1845 Foundation Medal, the University’s highest individual honour, to distinguished alumnus Dr Michael Dowling, in recognition of his exceptional contribution to healthcare, leadership, education, research and public service over more than five decades.
The 1845 Foundation Medal was commissioned by the Honorary Awards Board earlier this year to commemorate the University’s 180th anniversary and mark a significant milestone in the University’s history. It recognises individuals who have demonstrated excellence in their fields and whose achievements reflect the spirit and values of UCC. The inaugural award to Dr Dowling recognises an individual whose career has had a profound impact on healthcare in the United States and internationally.
An advocate for better health
Professor John O’Halloran MRIA, President of University College Cork, said: “It is a great privilege for UCC to confer its 1845 Foundation Medal on Dr Michael Dowling. The Medal is reserved for individuals who already hold an honorary degree along with other awards of distinction in their respective field. Michael’s career exemplifies the values that we associate with our university: leadership, service, innovation and a commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
From his education at UCC, he has gone on to become one of the most influential figures in healthcare. His leadership of Northwell Health, his commitment to research and education, and his advocacy for better health outcomes demonstrate the extraordinary impact that a UCC graduate can have on the world stage.”
A native of County Limerick, Michael graduated from University College Cork in 1970 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy and Economics. During his time at UCC, he was also a member of the University’s successful hurling team, winning a Fitzgibbon Cup medal. He has maintained a strong connection with his alma mater throughout his career and was previously honoured by UCC with an Alumni Achievement Award in 2011. A former director of Cork University Foundation he supports UCC students through GAA sports scholarships and enhances the student experience and opportunity, through internships for Cork University Business School students.
Dr Dowling has had an extraordinary career in healthcare leadership. He joined Northwell Health in 1995 and became President and Chief Executive Officer in 2002. During his time as CEO, he led the transformation of one of the largest integrated health systems in the United States.
Under his leadership, Northwell expanded its clinical, academic and research activities, with major investment in medical research, education and innovation. His influence extends well beyond the institutions he has led. Dr Dowling has been a prominent advocate for improving access to healthcare and for addressing gun violence as a public health issue. He has brought together healthcare leaders in support of prevention initiatives and has consistently emphasised the responsibility of health systems to address the wider social and community factors that affect health.
Following more than 23 years as President and CEO, Dr Dowling transitioned from the role in October 2025 and became CEO Emeritus of Northwell Health, where he continues to serve in an advisory capacity, supporting public health initiatives while devoting time to teaching and writing.
His contribution to healthcare leadership has been widely recognised. In March 2025, he was presented with the Research Ireland St Patrick’s Day Medal by An Taoiseach Micheál Martin in Washington, D.C., recognising his contribution to healthcare and his role in strengthening connections between Ireland and the United States.
A career that reflects the spirit of UCC
Kerry Bryson, CEO of Cork University Foundation who nominated Dr Dowling for the award, said: “The 1845 Foundation Medal celebrates individuals whose achievements reflect the spirit of UCC. The awarding of the 1845 Foundation Medal further strengthens UCC’s longstanding relationship with Dr Dowling, whose career and philanthropic support have reflected a continuing commitment to the University and to the advancement of sport, education, research and healthcare."
"It is particularly fitting that Michael Dowling should be the inaugural recipient. His career is a remarkable example of leadership rooted in knowledge, service and a deep sense of responsibility to community.”
Michael Dowling said: “I am deeply honoured to be the inaugural recipient of the 1845 Foundation Medal from University College Cork. UCC has been an important part of my life since I first arrived in Cork as a student and I have always regarded my time at the University as foundational to the person and professional I became."
"To receive an award established to mark UCC’s history and its continuing contribution to the world is very special indeed. I accept it with enormous gratitude and with great affection for the University and the people who have shaped my journey.”
The medal was designed by Irish Sculptor, Vivienne Roche, and the new 1845 Foundation Medal academic robe was designed to incorporate the three primary colours of the UCC crest.
The creation of the 1845 Foundation Medal in the University’s 180th anniversary year provides a lasting recognition of individuals whose achievements embody UCC’s enduring commitment to excellence and global impact.
