CLIMAR Erasmus+ Project Concludes
UCC together with a consortium of partners in Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Panama, Italy and Spain successfully concluded a three-year Erasmus + Capacity Building in Higher Education (CBHE) project in April 2026.
The CLIMAR project was the only EU Green Deal selected project for cooperation EU – Latin America for 2023-2026, dedicated to Strengthening research, innovation and knowledge transfer on Climate Change & Tourism in Higher Education Institutions in Latin America.
The project, co-coordinated by Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Obreal, links inter-disciplinary research, innovation and knowledge transfer to higher education curricular development and continuous professional training, so as to prepare the tourist sector to best face climate change and to mitigate its impacts. Outputs include an innovative postgraduate add in, collaborative research and publications and an online training programme for tourism providers throughout the region.

Consortium partners include universities in the Argentine coastal and mountain wine growing regions, coffee growing and indigenous eco-tourism regions in Colombia, Mexico and Panama. Spanish partners universities in Gran Canaria and Alicante and Italian partner Bologna, who specialise in Sustainable Tourism, and UCC with Sustainability contributions.
UCC hosted researchers from CLIMAR partners for a training week in April 2024 which focused on “Theory and Application of the Circular Economy in Tourism”. During the week they also visited MTU and successful local regenerative tourism initiatives in Cork and on the Dingle Peninsula to share and learn about European realities and challenges to building sustainability into rural tourism and our Gaeltacht.

SDSN Ireland based in UCC has facilitated links with SDSN network in Latin America and the Caribbean to further disseminate and share this novel training opportunity. Mexican partners and UCC have secured a further three-year E+CBHE that will support indigenous community lead sustainable tourism entrepreneurial projects.
