(Un)Silencing: A Symposium on Sonic Practice & Research

12 Sep 2025

Friday September 5, 2025 saw a community of scholars and artists working in and with sound gather in UCC for (Un)Silencing: A Symposium on Sonic Practice & Research.

(Un)Silencing, supported by The Future Humanities Institute and held at University College Cork, brought together leading artists and researchers to share their exciting work in the world of sound.

An emerging theme from across the day was the important role played by artists and scholars with connections to Cork in shaping the twin fields of Sound Art and Sound Studies with discussions centring on how the first (Un)Silencing event might be expanded and built upon in the future.

  • Zeynep Bulut introduced some of her recent work at the intersection of voice and sound studies exploring neoliberal narratives of self-care.
  • Anne Marie Deacy took us through the process of creating some of her sculptural sound pieces.
  • Irene Murphy and Mick O’Shea reflected on the work of the Guesthouse Collective over the past 20 years before introducing a film by Tomasz Madajczak shot during Sonic Vigil XI at Cork Opera House.
  • Robin Parmar explored theoretical intersections between Deleuze and Guattari, Sound Studies more generally, and his own sonic practice.
  • Declan Synnott overviewed a sampling of his musical projects offering insight into the intricacies of his compositional process.
  • Jenn Kirby introduced her bespoke wearable device, a waistcoat that translates physical motion into musical performance.
  • Phil Maguire presented a recent piece where audience members participate in the performance via smartphone.
  • Brona Martin walked us through some of her projects applying spatial audio to recreate and elaborate over the lost soundscapes of the Cutty Sark and St George's Garrison Church, Woolwich.

The symposium was convened by Dr Stephen Roddy of the Radical Humanities Laboratory, in association with Resonance: The Journal of Sound and Culture.
