Note: RIC Constable Dudley O’Sullivan and another RIC constable were walking on Hanover Street in Cork city on Thursday, 9 March 1922, when they were attacked by armed men. O’Sullivan was killed, but his comrade escaped and returned to the safety of Tuckey Street RIC Barracks. See CE, 10 March 1922. O’Sullivan had served in the RIC for only about a year; he had previously been a soldier in the British army. See Abbott (2000), 279. 

Dudley O’Sullivan was in 1911 one of the four co-resident children (two daughters and two sons) of the widow Mabel O’Sullivan of house 56.1 Pembroke Road in the Dublin district of Pembroke West. She was a house-property owner then aged 41. Her older son Kinpley O’Sullivan was a medical student, while her younger son Dudley (aged 16) was then still in school like his younger sister Muriel. Among all the O’Sullivans listed in the 1911 Irish census, there was only a single person named Dudley O’Sullivan.
