Following the success of the first two awareness days, the third Mouth Cancer Awareness
Day was held on Wednesday 19^th September, 2012.

Dr. Eimear Hurley was successful in her application to the Health Research Board for a Research Award 2012 to fund her PhD research investigating the Oral Microbiota of babies and pre-schoolers (ORALMET).

Congratulations to Dr Martina Hayes who has been awarded the HRB Research Fellowship for Health Care Professionals 2012. Martina is the first dentist who has been awarded this prestigious Fellowship.

Joey Donovan a 4th Year Dental Student was awarded the Costello Medal for 2013.

On the 14th & 15th November UCC Dental School and Hospital hosted the annual scientific meeting of the Divsional meeting of the IADR (International Association for Dental Research).

Congratulations to BDS III student Anand Iyer. Anand was recently awarded the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) Award 2013. 

In conjunction with our colleagues in Dublin Dental University Hospital and with dentists throughout the Country, we are delighted to host the Mouth Cancer Awareness Day 2013.

Each year more than 300 patients are diagnosed with cancer of the mouth or pharynx and the benefits of prevention and early detection are well known.  Mouth Cancer Awareness Day is an important event in the promotion of oral and general health care for the population.

Staff and student participation in MCAD plays an important role in raising public and professional awareness of the modifiable risk factors and warning signs for Mouth Head & Neck Cancer for current and future members of the dental team and their patients. 

"There is irrefutable evidence that early detection and treatment significantly improves the prognosis of patients with Mouth Head and Neck Cancer.  I commend the work of MHNCAI in the design and implementation of the Mouth Cancer Awareness Day, now in its 4th Year". Dr Peter Cooney, Chief Dental Officer, Canada.
