2. Introduction
It is preferable for students to progress their research without interruption. However, in some circumstances where a student has failed to register for a period longer than 12 months from the end of their last registration or approved leave of absence it is possible for a research student to apply to re-commence their programme.
Criteria of Policy
- Students may apply to re-commence their programme if they have failed to re-register for more than 12 months and less than 60 months. This deadline also applies to students that have completed an approved leave of absence but fail to re-register. These timelines apply to both full-time and part-time students.
- Students who apply to re-commence their programme must provide a brief statement on the reason for their extended period of expired registration.
- All applications for re-commencement of a programme are subject to approval by the Head of Unit or nominee in which the student was last registered.
- If an application for re-commencement of programme is successful, students are required to register and pay any outstanding fees for the approved period of time stated on their original offer letter.
- If a student’s registration has expired for a period longer than 60 months and they wish to register again then they must re-apply for entry to the University by submitting a new postgraduate application via UCC Apply application portal. This timeline applies to both full-time and part-time students.
Process for applying for Re-commencement of Programme
- If a student wishes to apply to re-commence their research programme, they must first discuss the matter with their full supervisory team, including financial implications.
- If the supervisory team supports re-commencement, then the Lead Supervisor must notify the Graduate Studies Office via email to thesissubmission@ucc.ie with the student name and student number to initiate the workflow.
- The Graduate Studies Office will activate the recommencement process electronically on UCCs research student administration system.
- The Lead Supervisor will be alerted via UCC’s research student administration system to provide an official recommendation supporting the re-commencement on behalf of the full supervisory team.
- The Head of Unit or nominee, in which the student is last registered, has final approval on UCC’s research student administration system.
- The student and the Supervisory Team will be notified of the outcome of the re-commencement application by email.
- If the re-commencement application is approved, the student will receive an email from the Graduate Studies Office inviting them to complete the registration process.
- In the event that the re-commencement application is not supported by the supervisory team, the applicant may proceed to request a review of their application directly to the Head of Unit or nominee in which they were last registered.
