UNIC UCC student rep Alex welcomes UCC students to the Lingua Café

UCC UNIC student representatives Alex and Diane held a Lingua Café to promote multilingualism, arts and culture on the UCC campus.

As part of the Lingua Café, students spoke a variety of languages in one setting, highlighting the linguistic diversity of UCC and the broader UNIC alliance. Upon entering the Lingua Café, students were provided with a label where they could write their name and the languages that they spoke. Students could then mingle and connect with fellow students, speaking their own language or learning some words in a new language.

At the Lingua Café, there were students that spoke Irish, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian, German, Swedish, Dutch, Finnish, Polish, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hebrew and more. Hearing the variety of languages created a great atmosphere and everyone was eager to practise their language skills. The Lingua Café was run with the UCC Italian, Hispanic and An Chuallacht (Irish language) societies.

The Lingua Café proved to be a great opportunity to promote UNIC on campus, to encourage multilingualism and to spark a curiosity in students to learn some words in a new language.
