Cliona Maher Visits The University of Deusto

Cliona Maher is the International Strategy Officer for Latin America & the Caribbean at University College Cork.

I visited our UNIC partner University of Deusto (UD), Bilbao, in October to explore cooperation and learn from inspiring work they are doing to build solidarity with Latin American issues and global citizenship in the Basque Country.

The Human Rights Institute at UD runs a leadership programme for Latin American Indigenous environmental leaders. The institute also works with a local NGO, KCD, who use cinema to communicate for development and inspire re-writing stories for a better world. (KCD: Kultura, Communication y Desarrollo or Culture, Communication and Development.)

KCD's annual INVISIBLE CINEMA festival showcases 150 stories from around the world and includes interactive sessions in over 20 educational centres in the Basque country, including UD.

We plan to bring some of these stories and events to UCC next semester with colleagues at UD.
