CODING | Core Outcome Set for the Treatment of Women with GTD: An International Consensus Study

Gestational Trophoblastic Disease (GTD) also known as molar pregnancy, is a rare group of disorders affecting 1 in 600 pregnancies. Most molar pregnancies resolve following uterine evacuation, however a small number progress to malignant forms and require chemotherapy. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial to its excellent prognosis, with survival rates of greater then 95%.

Due to its rarity, there is very little evidence available in randomised control trials for optimum treatment and follow up. Around the world, and even within different centres in the same country, treatment protocols vary. We aim to develop a Core Outcome Set for GTD to help standardise outcome measurement and reporting. This will improve the quality of information on what treatments work in the long run, enabling better and more informed clinical decision making.

What is involved?

“A core outcome set (COS) is an agreed standardised set of outcomes that should be measured and reported, as a minimum, in all clinical trials in specific areas of health or health care”

There will be three phases to the CODING project.

  1. We will perform a service evaluation looking at what outcomes are currently recorded in GTD databases internationally, alongside a systematic review of the literature, to produce a list of outcomes reported in trials assessing effectiveness of treatments in GTD.
  2. This will be followed by a Delphi consensus study, which involves rounds of questions to experts in the field which evolve over time in response to earlier findings. Participants can reflect on responses of others in previous rounds to reposition their opinions accordingly and prioritise the outcomes to be included.
  3. The final stage will involve a one-day consensus meeting with experts to review the evidence and decide on the final Core Outcome Set.
