Abstract

After WW2, Ireland (state and nation) embarked on a large-scale relief operation, sending supplies (foodstuffs, clothes & medicines) to Amsterdam all the way to the Greek islands, including Eastern Europe increasingly controlled by the Stalinists. The book narrates the efforts of leading politicians, civil servants and citizens in sending the supplies and also the reactions of continentals, from politicians and ecclesiastics to men, women and children. 216 archives were contacted for this project and the book incorporates primary sources in nine languages, photographs and drawings of children. It is to-date Ireland's largest relief operation, yet hardly known.
