Abstract
This work tackles this question in both a blog post ( https://justice-everywhere.org/general/choose-your-own-philosophical-policy-role/ ) and an academic article. The defended position is "convergent evaluation": laying out the philosophical positions, mapping those to policy options using valid arguments and indicating the strengths and weaknesses of those positions--without any special role for the philosopher's own view!
