A Bit of a Song and Dance: Heart, Nervous System and the Changing of the World
.png)
An inaugural performative lecture celebrating the work of Professor Jools Gilson, hosted by the Future Humanities Institute.
Abstract
In this performative lecture, Jools Gilson tangles story with idea whilst travelling across disciplines (sometimes in a shrimp trawler) to speak to the experience of embodiment. Held by bodies of water (the Thames Estuary and the Gearagh), this exploration of felt experience and paradigm shift addresses the nervous system as inheritance but also as teacher of friendliness, improvisation and play. What does it mean to decolonise the nervous system and where do you get the recipe? We visit with the revolutionary thinking of adrienne maree brown, Donna Haraway and Lucy Neale. On the way there is a dashing tale of shots at sea and probably some dancing. Shifting perceptual worlds we end in stillness - wondering with the freshwater pearl mussels of The Gearagh.
Discussant: Prof. Triona Ni Shíocháin, University of Maynooth.
