Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre Centre https://teatrnn.pl/en/ in Lublin is a unique cultural institution dedicated to the protection of cultural heritage and education, whose activities draw upon the symbolic and historical significance of its seat, the Grodzka Gate, formerly a passage between the Christian and Jewish quarters, as well as Lublin’s location at the meeting point of cultures, traditions, and religions. The central theme of this talk is the use of theatre and oral storytelling as forms of working with local community and the development of methods through which documentary sources and local cultural heritage enter contemporary public circulation. This approach makes a theatre performance a means of transmitting personal memory and connecting historical narratives with specific places in the contemporary city. Witold Dąbrowski is an actor, storyteller, musician, theatre practitioner and cultural animator whose professional career has been closely connected with the development of the Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre Centre in Lublin. Dąbrowski’s career has developed outside a conventional academic path (graduate of UMCS, Lublin, MPhil degree in Music). Its continuity lies in more than three decades of artistic practice, cultural management, education and the creation of performative forms for working with literature, oral history and memory. His experience combines theatre practice with sustained institutional work, international artistic cooperation and the setting up of oral history projects significant for local and international communities.
