Language is a key factor in community vitality, the focus of UN SDG11. In addition, the EU initiative ‘Europe’s Digital Decade’ seeks to develop “a human-centric, sustainable vision for digital society… to empower citizens”. Yet, one group that risks being left behind in the current digital revolution are speakers of minoritized or lesser-used languages, whose communities may lack the resources and infrastructure to access digital developments in the same way as majority languages. This symposium explores the role of academics from across disciplines in the sustainable digital development of minoritized languages. This includes the challenges emerging technologies, such as AI, pose for minoritized languages, as well as the new opportunities they may bring for supporting at-risk languages and communities into the future.
