How does a writer build a world? In this presentation, the intention is to look at the origins of the world-building for my first two novels, from the drenched dystopia of The Earlie King & the Kid In Yellow to the mundane dual carriageways and electrified soundscapes of All Along The Echo. Touching on a brief encounter with ‘mindfulness’, investigations into hauntology as a methodology, the philosophical theories of Marc Augé as well as lessons learned from writers like Jonathan Dos Passos, Virginia Woolf, Nicola Barker and T.S. Eliot in honing my writing craft, my hope is to de-mystify the process of building worlds in fiction, and to try to chart the crossover between research and invention, as well as considering practically how the writer and reader of the same work collaborate in the creative act of conjuring a world.
