Platforms: Culture-To- Product Platform

Overview

This Platform seeks to isolate and identify new strains through mining the microbiota. These mining activities provide access to thousands of microorganisms (mostly bacteria) with potential biofunctional activities. This represents a very valuable resource for the APC and has already yielded a well catalogued, quality controlled, and easily accessed culture collection. We continue to isolate new strains (aerobic and anaerobic), many of which do not have known cultivation processes. In order to demonstrate clinical efficacy and to define the potential of these strains as functional components in various product formats, it is necessary to generate new protocols to cultivate these microorganisms in high quantities and to preserve them as dried or frozen preparations without affecting stability or their key functional activities.  This Technology Platform develops the processes to deliver such cultures in formats suitable for applications in further research or in pilot-scale products.
