RIA Honours Catherine Stanton And Ivan Perry

Professor Catherine Stanton and Ivan Perry were among 27 new Members of the Royal Irish Academy welcomed by Professor Kennedy, President of the Royal Irish Academy, at the 2019 admittance day ceremony.

Welcoming these eminent scholars to the Academy Professor Kennedy said that ‘these individuals have made exceptional contributions in their fields of endeavour. We are delighted to recognise their achievements’.

Prof Catherine Stanton is a Senior Research Officer, Teagasc, Dept. Psychiatry, UCC and Principal Investigator in APC Microbiome Ireland. Her research includes nutritional aspects of dairy and functional foods, probiotic cultures, bioactive metabolite production, infant gut microbiota, and healthy proteins and fats (including conjugated linoleic acid, short chain fatty acids) that are produced by gut bacteria. She is also very interested in the microbiome during pregnancy and in infancy.  She was ranked in the top 1% of researchers in the world by Clarivate Analytics in their highly Cited Researchers list 2017 and 2018.

Professor Ivan Perry MD, MSc (Epidemiology), PhD, is Professor of Public Health and Head of the Department of Epidemiology & Public Health, University College Cork and APC Associated Faculty. Following his appointment to UCC in 1997 he established de novo a flourishing multidisciplinary department of Epidemiology & Public Health with a national profile in cardiovascular disease and diabetes epidemiology and health services research. He is the founding Director of the Irish National Self Harm Register and co-Principal Investigator on the 3rd National Health and Lifestyle Survey (SLAN) and the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA). Professor Perry has led the development of a novel 4-year BSc programme in Public Health & Health Promotion and innovative masters programmes in population health sciences. He is interdisciplinary theme leader for “Health Services, Health Policy and Population Health” in UCC. He is a co-Principal Investigator on the Phd Scholar Programme in Health Services Research funded by the Health Research Board in 2007. He is Principal Investigator on the HRB Centre for Health and Diet Research (in collaboration with UCD).
