Athena Swan Self Assess Team
I am delighted to be part of a movement that recognises the need for equality and social justice.
The committee allows us to collectively strive for change, to exemplify great practice, and challenge and explore solutions to the structural barriers that lead to inequality.
My interest in Athena SWAN is probably best summed up in the words of Mahatma Ghandi (1925) "Our ability to reach unity in diversity will be the beauty and the test of our civilization."
I am delighted to be on the Athena SWAN committee in the School of Nursing & Midwifery because I get to have a say in promoting an inclusive environment for our students and staff.
Athena SWAN is a comprehensive and systemic scheme, recognising gender equality to assist with advancing individual careers.
Athena Swan provides a useful framework for my commitment to gender equality in research and higher education
To me, Athena SWAN means a commitment to equality and a celebration of diversity in our School.
As a School we cannot reach our full potential unless we benefit from the talents of all.
Everything we do as nurses and midwives is seeking fair, just, and equitable outcomes for our patients and their families. It is so important we mirror these ambitions in everything we do as a School.
I am passionate about equality and equity because I believe it is important for everyone to feel that they belong within their community and have an opportunity and a fair chance to be involved in anything their heart desires.
Noreen Murphy-Coakley (student rep)
As an undergraduate student representative on the Athena Swan committee with life experience behind me, I am passionate about equity and the inclusion of everyone.
