UCC Family Language Scheme
During the summer Dún Chíomháin is available to staff members and their families as a place where they can practice their Irish. They will also have an opportunity to meet people who use Irish as their first language on a daily basis.
Approximately 20 families partake in this scheme every year and it is run between the start of June and the end of August. The families usually stay in the Gaeltacht for a period of one week. A language assistant is available to families to assist them in making their stay more enjoyable by providing them with local knowledge and by assisting them in their use of Irish.
Please email g.labh@ucc.ie if you would like more information or if you wish to request an application form.
Schools' Liaison Scheme
The aim of this scheme is to show the universities support of Irish-medium post primary schools. A panel visits the senior classes in a number of different schools to discuss UCC itself, academic life, college social life, along with the opportunities, schemes and courses that are available for Irish speakers in UCC. The scheme is also used to encourage students to apply for a course in UCC.
Usually there are two students and one staff member on the panel. As the panel members come from various different departments and units within UCC, a wide diversity of information is shared with the pupils.
A meeting is organized in March every year to discuss the terms of reference and the aims of the scheme. Feedback is also given on the school visits and recomendations are made as on how the scheme can be improved upon.
