Student Centre/Devere Hall Extension
The Student Centre, Aras na Mac Leinn became the hub of campus social life following its completion in late 1995. The success of the building resulted however in huge pressure on the facilities and an extension to the building was required. As part of the overall Master Plan it was envisaged that an extension would occur towards the Presidents Garden and be designed in conjunction with the Honan Square, the centrepiece of the Campus Environmental Plan. A survey undertaken in April 2000 determined the brief for the design team i.e. enhancement of the coffee shop and catering facilities, provide areas (rooms and restaurant) for open access PCs, facilitate movement of bookshop and banking facilities out of Boole Basement, provide two new large meeting rooms and provide a permanent home for the Students Union Offices. Following a major design review of the options available it was decided to adopt a scheme which involved the demolition of the Honan Biological Institute. The chosen scheme provides a new modern focus at the eastern end of the campus for student activity.
