UNIC Training event held at UCC: Methods in Migration and Superdiversity
On June 2nd, University College Cork hosted a training day on methods used in migration and superdiversity research under UNIC's Thematic Line 1 (Superdiversity).
The hybrid event was held in UCC's Western Gateway Building and online. It was open to all staff, as well as post-doctoral researchers, postgraduate and PhD students across UNIC.
Under the stewardship of Dr Mastoureh Fathi, Senior Lecturer in Sociology, the programme included lectures by experts from the UNIC Superdiversity network, who shared insights from their considerable experience in migration research. Dr Fathi was joined in person by speakers from Rotterdam, Oulu, Liège, and Bilbao; while a speaker from Istanbul presented virtually. The training covered methods of research that are key to understanding the diversity and mobility of the populations of post-industrial cities. The day-long event provided an opportunity for researchers and postgraduate students to connect and for those visiting to take a walk together through the city.
Research methods ranged from walking interviews described by Professor Roger Norum from Oulu University, to studying migration through food, as outlined by Dr Elsa Mescoli from Liège University. The training was organised under UNIC’s thematic line of Superdiversity and concerned an area of research that is of vital importance to post-industrial cities today.
