Mairéad Loughman is a Risk Manager in the Office of Corporate and Legal Affairs at University College Cork. Mairéad recently travelled to Erasmus University Rotterdam on an Erasmus+ staff training visit.

The UNIC office at UCC made contact with their counterpart colleagues at Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR) to facilitate my Erasmus+ staff mobility visit in March 2024.

Rotterdam is Netherland’s second city (after the national capital Amsterdam); it was almost completely reconstructed after WW2 and hosts Europe's biggest harbour and seaport. Rotterdam is also one of the most multicultural cities in Europe, with over 170 nationalities living in the diverse city.

At EUR, I met colleagues from Risk Management, Audit, ITS, Cyber Information Security, Data Protection and Emergency Management (focus on student and staff wellbeing after an emergency incident).

I also had a 1:1 ‘tutorial’ on Erasmus by an Erasmus scholar with a follow-up visit to the Erasmus Experience in the Rotterdam Public Library.I learned that EUR claims to follow ‘Erasmian values’ in its current Strategic Plan, Strategy 2024, and implementation of the ‘unique’ strategy is called “The Erasmian Way”.

Erasmians are:

  • Engaged with society
  • World citizens
  • Connecting
  • Entrepreneurial
  • Open-minded

EUR’s mission is “Creating Positive Societal Impact” and its slogan is “Making Minds Matter”.

It was a very successful Erasmus+ visit with all objectives achieved.
