Meet James McCarthy
James McCarthy, a fourth-year Public Health Science Student at University College Cork Joins HIRH for an eight week work placement.

My name is James McCarthy, and I am a fourth-year Public Health Science student at University College Cork (UCC).
As part of my 8-week work placement, I am contributing to the CUSTOMISE project under the supervision of Dr Ana Contreras Navarro. My role includes extracting data from 179 included studies using DistillerSR, an evidence synthesis platform that supports the organisation, management, and extraction of data for scoping reviews. I also support the analysis of extracted data by generating descriptive numerical summaries, assist with proofreading manuscripts, and attend project team meetings.
Alongside my academic training, I have practical experience in pre-hospital emergency care. I qualified as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) in 2020 and volunteered with the Irish Red Cross ambulance service from 2017 to 2023. This experience has strengthened my interest in public health research and improving healthcare through evidence-informed practice.
