Brain-Gut-Microbiota Axis

The Brain-Gut-Microbiota Axis Theme is focused on elucidating the role of the intestinal microbiota as a regulator of gut-brain axis signalling by investigating mechanism of action and translational studies with the aim of developing new therapeutic approaches to human disease, including identification of novel psychobiotics with the capacity to modulate brain function.

Research Aims:

  • To determine mechanisms and pathways in microbe-brain signalling
  • To assess the role of microbiota-gut-brain signalling in vulnerability to brain disorders at key stages across the lifespan
  • To explore human gut-brain axis perturbation and clinical validation of microbiome-based interventions in humans
