Myths of Origin of Communicative Language Teaching

Barbara Schmenk joined the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies at the University of Waterloo in 2004.

She received her PhD in Applied Linguistics from the Ruhr-Universität Bochum in 2000. Before coming to UW, she has held appointments at Ruhr-Universität Bochum/Germany, Trinity College Dublin/Ireland, and Clemson University, SC/USA. Her research interests lie in the area of language education and include topics such as language and gender, language and culture, autonomy, drama pedagogy, multilingualism, the educational value of inflatable toys in the language classroom, and teacher cognition.
