Freud’s ‘decentering’ theory of the unconscious culminates in his formula that humans are not “masters in their own house”. As a critic of humanity’s anthropomorphic world-view Freud saw himself in a row with Copernicus and Darwin. Michel Foucault calls him a “founder of discursivity” as he had established an endless possibility of discourses. In his writings Freud presents a new model of the human psyche, a cultural theory, and a revolutionary approach to the therapy of neurotic disorders. However, in the field of the humanities a new method of interpretation was more relevant than anything else. Freud’s Interpretation of Dreams became the paradigm of a hermeneutic theory which allows to reveal the unconscious significance of texts and all sorts of cultural artefacts.
Hans Walter Schmidt-Hannisa is Professor of German at NUI Galway. He has largely published on literary and cultural theory and is an eminent expert on Sigmund Freud’s hermeneutics of dreams.
