Competing anti-slavery projects in early independent Haiti

This paper presents the principal findings emerging from her recent (2012-15) British Academy-funded postdoctoral project: Haiti and the international politics of anti-slavery. The project aimed to broaden our knowledge and understanding of exactly what should be considered as ‘anti-slavery activity’, by considering the declaration of Haitian independence in 1804 as the founding event of an anti-slavery nation. Her project looks at a broad array of examples of early Haitian abolitionist texts, national press articles, correspondence and communications with the global anti-slavery movement, national law and foreign policy, and on-the-ground activism designed to repel and resist any future enslavement of Haitians or foreign nationals on Haitian soil.
Dr Kate Hodgson recently joined UCC as Lecturer in French from the University of Liverpool, where she held a British Academy Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. Most recently, she is co-editor of At the Limits of Memory: Legacies of Slavery in the Francophone World (Liverpool University Press, 2015), and has published on Haiti, commemoration and state memorialization, slavery and abolition in the Caribbean.
