BA World Languages Graduations

First cohort of BAWL students graduated on 23 October 2018

Congratulations to the first graduate students on the BA World Languages who received their parchments from the President of UCC, Professor Patrick O’Shea, at a graduation award ceremony on 23 October. The conferring speech was given by Professor David Little, Professor Emeritus at the Centre for Language and Communication Studies at Trinity College Dublin.

The BA World Languages received its first cohort of students into the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures in 2014 under the directorship of Dr Mark Chu. The programme allows students to choose a range of languages, including French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, along with Irish and a number of Asian languages, namely Chinese, Japanese and Korean. Reflecting the pivotal role of foreign language competence in today’s multilingual world, students specialise in a number of languages and their related cultures. The programme allows students to spend a period of study at a university abroad, choosing from a range of countries across Europe, Latin America and Asia. Students can divide their studies between universities in two different countries, and are funded under the European Union’s Erasmus+ programme. Taken together, students graduate with significant multilingual skills across a range of languages, as well as intercultural skills reflecting today’s global world.
