Photonics Escape Room

22 Mar 2022

The Photonics Escape Room is a brand new activity developed by Irish Photonics Integration Centre (IPIC) researchers focused on imparting some of the most famous photonics discoveries in a fun and unique way.

The team aim to host the room in multiple public events across Ireland and the UK over the next two years, including Cork, Dublin, Belfast and Glasgow.

The storyline of the escape room is as follows:

Hackers are trying to shut down the world's internet by sending a bug through fibre optic cables to the main data centres across the world. The hackers use famous photonics physicist names to mask their true identities. The hackers don’t trust outsiders or their fellow criminals and have created puzzles not only to keep the authorities from discovering their secrets but also each other. The Irish Photonics Intelligence Centre (IPIC) has discovered the hackers’ hideout and need participants to solve the puzzles left by the hackers, obtain the key code and prevent the bug being uploaded.

Participants are asked in teams complete a number of puzzles based on the work of five famous photonics researchers - Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, Donna Strickland, Theodore Maiman, Christiaan Huygens and Augustin-Jean Fresnel.
