Research into nursing homes in Munster has found that a significant proportion of patients have either been prescribed a potentially inappropriate medicine or not given a beneficial one.

The School of Pharmacy at University College Cork is celebrating ten years in existence this year.  These celebrations have commenced with an evening event for community and hospital pharmacists – entitled "The future is bright: The future is CPD" on 14 May.

The School of Pharmacy at UCC hosted its annual Business Seminar for final year students on Monday and Tuesday 24 and 25 September.  This year’s seminar was sponsored by McNeil and students participated in a two day programme covering a wide range of topics which started with a presentation from Brenda Nestor of UCC Careers service on  a prescription for a great CV.

The School of Pharmacy at University College Cork held its annual open day on January 3th 2013.  The aim of this event is to provide a taste of the UCC course for leaving certificate students who are interested in a career in pharmacy.

Winners of this year’s BioSciences Researcher of the Year Award at University College Cork are Dr John Woolley, Postdoctoral Researcher, Biochemistry and Fionn O’Brien, PhD student in Pharmacy at the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (Pictured). Both winners presented results of their current life science research projects being carried out at the BioSciences Institute in UCC. The recipients of the Award were selected on a competitive basis and the event held on 5th November last was sponsored by Roche Diagnostics Ltd whose longstanding support of this award promotes the development of excellence in scientific researchers such as these.

UCC scientists received three of the nine awards granted to Irish third level institutions for cancer research at the recent annual Irish Cancer Society Research Awards Ceremony.

Congratulations to postgraduate student, Richard O’Connor, who won the prize for Best Organic Chemistry Poster at the 64th Irish Universities Chemistry Research Colloquium, held by the Department of Chemical & Environmental Sciences at the University of Limerick on June 14-15th, 2012.

The annual Pharmacy Prize-giving for the 2013 graduating class took place in the School of Pharmacy, this morning 13 June 2013 after the University conferrings   Professor Caitriona O’Driscoll, Head of School welcomed, parents, graduates, staff and the sponsors of these annual prizes.  The representatives of organisations who had donated prizes were thanked for their their continuing generosity which is very much appreciated by the School

Anne Moore and Abina Crean, both of UCC School of Pharmacy, and Dr. Conor O’Mahony of the Tyndall National Institute, have been named as the 2012 UCC Research Team of the Year for their work on microneedle technologies. Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and PharmaChemical Ireland (PCI) will host a forum at UCC’s Cavanagh Pharmacy Building on Thursday, May 27th 2010 which will showcase SFI funded research to the Irish pharmaceutical industry.

At a novel event on Jan 6th, the School of Pharmacy at University College Cork hosted an Open Day where forty students from Munster secondary schools learned about Pharmacy as a discipline, the Pharmacy degree program and career opportunities.  The purpose of the initiative was to help inform students who may be considering a career in Pharmacy or the Pharmaceutical Sciences.

The future of low-cost, painless drug and vaccine delivery is the topic of discussion this week at Tyndall National Institute in Cork, where up to 180 clinicians, scientists and entrepreneurs from 25 countries are converging to share their insights about microneedle technology.

The Microneedles 2012 Conference is running until 15 May at Tyndall National Institute. Based at University College Cork, the institute is supplying silicon microneedle tech to global academic and industrial partners.

The 2nd Annual Research Conference of the SFI-funded Irish Drug Delivery Network (IDDN) Strategic Research Cluster was held at the School of Pharmacy in UCC on June, 17^th  2010.

This one day conference brought together leading investigators from the IDDN with invited international speakers on the topic of novel advanced technologies and assessments of drug delivery. The conference attempted to increase the networking capacity of IDDN through co-sponsorship with the UK-Ireland Chapter of the Controlled Release Society (UKICRS) and to provide an annual platform for discussion of drug delivery research in Ireland.

The Fifth Annual Pharmacy Prize-giving for the graduating class, which was once again generously sponsored by the Bank of Ireland, took place on Thursday 16th June in the Aula Maxima.  Professor John Higgins, Head of the College of Medicine and Health was welcomed by Professor Peter Weedle, and a warm welcome was extended to parents, graduates and staff.  The representatives of organisations who had donated prizes were thanked for their support and their continuing generosity noted and appreciated by all.  

Just when the college's social calender year was beginning to grind to a halt, students at the School of Pharmacy were pulling out their glad-rags in anticipation of the annual Pharmacy Ball. Excitement was palpable around the Cavanagh building for the proceeding fortnight with everyone trying to finalise tickets, outfit and general arrangements. Behind the scenes, the UCC Pharmacy Society were busy preparing for their biggest and most subscribed event of the year.

   The event will take place in the Cavanagh Pharmacy Building, Room UG23 from 1:30 - 2:30

The School of Pharmacy, in association with the in association with the UCC Pharmacy Society organised an Industrial Pharmacy Career event entitled ‘Career opportunities for Industrial Pharmacists’ on Thursday 17^th February 2011

The School of Pharmacy hosted a seminar evening entitled Pharmacists in Primary Care on Tuesday 6 March 2012.  This was targeted at undergraduate students to give a clearer insight to the role of Pharmacists in Primary Care. 

The Cavanagh Pharmacy Building (CPB) is widely recognised as a state-of-the-art infrastructure for teaching and research across all aspects of the Pharmaceutical Sciences. In addition, it plays a critical role for interaction with external stakeholders in the healthcare and industrial arenas. Included in the building is a unique industry suite designed to facilitate partnership with pharmaceutical companies ranging from start-up companies to multinational organisations. The School is delighted to welcome its new partner to occupy this suite from October 2010 – NexPhar.

Seven out of ten older people in nursing homes in Ireland are getting at least one inappropriately prescribed medicine, according to a study launched today (April 6th 2011). A cross-border research team led by Dr Stephen Byrne, Senior Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacy at University College Cork, found that 630 older people in long-term care in Northern Ireland and the Cork area were receiving an average of 11 medicines each. Half of them were prescribed 8-14 daily medicines each.

This award was founded by the Chinese government in 2003 with the purpose of rewarding the academic excellence of self financed Chinese students studying overseas.  Only those with outstanding performance in their PhD studies are considered by the award selection panel and no more than 500 young talented graduates are granted the award each year all over the world.

On the morning of Monday 21st March the entrance of the Cavanagh Pharmacy Building was brimming with activity as the School of Pharmacy’s annual bake sale got underway. This year the bake sale, organised by postgraduate students in the school, was in aid of the Suas Volunteer Programme. Third year Undergraduate student Justin Daly was selected to participate in the volunteer programme organised by Suas Educational Development and will be travelling to Kolkata, India (Calcutta) in Summer 2011. He aims to raise €3,000 for the charity.

This event marked the end of an innovative 3 day Business Seminar held each year for the final year Pharmacy students to provide them with an introduction to the skills they will need in their future careers.

The 34^th Schools of Pharmacy Research Seminar will be held at the School of Pharmacy, University College Cork on 2nd & 3rd April 2012. This promises to be a very interesting and informative conference and will include a diverse range of research presentations from postgraduate students from the Schools of Pharmacy at the University of Ulster, Queen’s University Belfast, Trinity College Dublin, Royal College of Surgeons and University College Cork.

The School of Pharmacy at University College Cork held its annual open day on January 5^th 2012.  It is an event specifically geared towards helping senior cycle secondary students who may like to pursue a career in pharmacy.  Not only are the students provided with detailed information about the Pharmacy Course in UCC (CK703); they are introduced to the core degree subjects; they put some of this knowledge to use in laboratory sessions and they get to meet the School staff.  This year the 61 attendees were introduced to tablet making, they synthesised a drug substance and they provided diagnosis for symptoms in a hypothetical patient.

Stress, especially that occurring in early life and childhood, is a major predisposing factor to developing pain symptoms associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome according to a study by UCC scientists to be published in the prestigious academic journal Gastroenterology in June.

The Seminar which has been sponsored for the past four years by United Drug, provides the students with opportunities to hear presentations from a range of experts. 

Over 80 delegates from within the pharmaceutical industry in Ireland gathered at UCC on February 26th 2010 to hear eminent keynote speakers discuss the role of the ‘Qualified Person’ (QP) in the pharmaceutical sector.

On Wed 07 Dec 2012 the graduation ceremony took place of the MSc/PG Diploma In Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Systems at the School of Pharmacy UCC. This year eleven people graduated from the programme. Four students, Patricia Cooney, Rachel Gatt Rutter, Francene Cauchi and Sinead O'Malley were conferred with a Masters in Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Systems. Seven students were awarded Postgraduate Diplomas. All graduates are in full time employment within the Pharmaceutical Industry.
