The future of low-cost, painless drug and vaccine delivery is the topic of discussion this week at Tyndall National Institute in Cork, where up to 180 clinicians, scientists and entrepreneurs from 25 countries are converging to share their insights about microneedle technology.

The Microneedles 2012 Conference is running until 15 May at Tyndall National Institute. Based at University College Cork, the institute is supplying silicon microneedle tech to global academic and industrial partners.

This coming week on the 23^rd and 24^th April, 2012, The School of Pharmacy, University College Cork has the privilege of hosting the internationally acclaimed prestigious Health Services Research and Pharmacy Practice Conference.

The 34^th Schools of Pharmacy research seminar was held at the School of Pharmacy, University College Cork on Monday 2^nd and Tuesday 3^rd April 2012. The conference was kindly sponsored by Actavis and the Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU). It was attended by over 90 postgraduate students and academic staff from the University of Ulster, Queen’s University Belfast, Trinity College Dublin, Royal College of Surgeons and University College Cork.

The 34^th Schools of Pharmacy Research Seminar will be held at the School of Pharmacy, University College Cork on 2nd & 3rd April 2012. This promises to be a very interesting and informative conference and will include a diverse range of research presentations from postgraduate students from the Schools of Pharmacy at the University of Ulster, Queen’s University Belfast, Trinity College Dublin, Royal College of Surgeons and University College Cork.

The School of Pharmacy hosted a seminar evening entitled Pharmacists in Primary Care on Tuesday 6 March 2012.  This was targeted at undergraduate students to give a clearer insight to the role of Pharmacists in Primary Care.

The School of Pharmacy at University College Cork held its annual open day on January 5^th 2012.  It is an event specifically geared towards helping senior cycle secondary students who may like to pursue a career in pharmacy.  Not only are the students provided with detailed information about the Pharmacy Course in UCC (CK703); they are introduced to the core degree subjects; they put some of this knowledge to use in laboratory sessions and they get to meet the School staff.  This year the 61 attendees were introduced to tablet making, they synthesised a drug substance and they provided diagnosis for symptoms in a hypothetical patient.

On Wed 07 Dec 2012 the graduation ceremony took place of the MSc/PG Diploma In Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Systems at the School of Pharmacy UCC. This year eleven people graduated from the programme. Four students, Patricia Cooney, Rachel Gatt Rutter, Francene Cauchi and Sinead O'Malley were conferred with a Masters in Pharmaceutical Technology and Quality Systems. Seven students were awarded Postgraduate Diplomas. All graduates are in full time employment within the Pharmaceutical Industry.

The Fifth Annual Pharmacy Prize-giving for the graduating class, which was once again generously sponsored by the Bank of Ireland, took place on Thursday 16th June in the Aula Maxima.  Professor John Higgins, Head of the College of Medicine and Health was welcomed by Professor Peter Weedle, and a warm welcome was extended to parents, graduates and staff.  The representatives of organisations who had donated prizes were thanked for their support and their continuing generosity noted and appreciated by all.  

UCC President, Dr Michael Murphy officiated at the launch of a publication “Pharmacy and Medicines Law in Ireland” on May 18th 2011.  This publication is edited by Professor Peter Weedle and Ms Leonie Clarke both of whom have very strong associations with the School of Pharmacy, UCC.

Seven out of ten older people in nursing homes in Ireland are getting at least one inappropriately prescribed medicine, according to a study launched today (April 6th 2011). A cross-border research team led by Dr Stephen Byrne, Senior Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacy at University College Cork, found that 630 older people in long-term care in Northern Ireland and the Cork area were receiving an average of 11 medicines each. Half of them were prescribed 8-14 daily medicines each.

On the morning of Monday 21st March the entrance of the Cavanagh Pharmacy Building was brimming with activity as the School of Pharmacy’s annual bake sale got underway. This year the bake sale, organised by postgraduate students in the school, was in aid of the Suas Volunteer Programme. Third year Undergraduate student Justin Daly was selected to participate in the volunteer programme organised by Suas Educational Development and will be travelling to Kolkata, India (Calcutta) in Summer 2011. He aims to raise €3,000 for the charity.

The 2nd year Pharmacy Students visited Gilead Life Sciences, Carrigtwohill, on the 14th and 15th March as part of their PF2008 Pharmaceutical Technology module.

Just when the college's social calender year was beginning to grind to a halt, students at the School of Pharmacy were pulling out their glad-rags in anticipation of the annual Pharmacy Ball. Excitement was palpable around the Cavanagh building for the proceeding fortnight with everyone trying to finalise tickets, outfit and general arrangements. Behind the scenes, the UCC Pharmacy Society were busy preparing for their biggest and most subscribed event of the year.

The School of Pharmacy, in association with the in association with the UCC Pharmacy Society organised an Industrial Pharmacy Career event entitled ‘Career opportunities for Industrial Pharmacists’ on Thursday 17^th February 2011

The event involved a series of presentations on the various career opportunities for pharmacists in the pharmaceutical industry.  The speakers included Mr. David O Grady, M.P.S.I., Technical Development Manager,

Genzyme, Mr. Tom O’Brien M.P.S.I., Project Manager, Solvotrin,  Mr. Donal Coakley, M.P.S.I., QA specialist, Gilead Sciences, Ms. Anne McGee, M.P.S.I, Managing Director, Anne McGee Consulting Ltd, Baldoyle, Dublin and Mr. Tony Hynes M.P.S.I.,  Managing Director, Actavis Ireland Ltd, Little Island, Cork. 

Congratulations to 4th year Pharmacy Student Maria Donovan on winning a prize at this year's Health Research Board Watt's Medal and Poster Competition.

At a novel event on Jan 6th, the School of Pharmacy at University College Cork hosted an Open Day where forty students from Munster secondary schools learned about Pharmacy as a discipline, the Pharmacy degree program and career opportunities.  The purpose of the initiative was to help inform students who may be considering a career in Pharmacy or the Pharmaceutical Sciences.

“Depression: From Psychopathology to Pharmacotherapy” edited by Dr John F. Cryan, Senior Lecturer in School of Pharmacy and Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutics and Principal Investigator in the Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre (APC) along with Professor Brian E. Leonard Emeritus Professor NUI Galway has just been published by Karger Press ISBN: 978-3-8055-9605-3.

Mr George Hook, a well-known television and radio presenter and a volunteer for the Haven Trust Foundation, accepted a cheque from postgraduate students from The School of Pharmacy who raised money through their annual cake sale for Haven Trust.

Professor Anita Maguire's article  "State-of-the-Art Teaching and Research Across All Aspects of Pharmaceutical Sciences" is featured in the Public Service Review: Science & Technology: Issue 8.
