Language Awareness
The Centre for Spoken Irish organised a conference on language awareness which took place on the 11 June 2026. The proceedings were multilingual and all papers in languages other than English featured simultaneous interpreting into English. This conference seeked to identify challenges and opportunities relating to our awareness of Irish and other languages in the multilingual society in which we now live.
Of particular note were papers by An Coimisinéir Teanga, an overview of Irish Sign Language (in ISL), as well as papers providing international perspectives on lesser-used languages in collaboration with UNIC. The conference was brought to a close with a paper by Prof Mary Phelan (DCU) entitled ‘The FGM case: an 'isolated case' or a symptom of a systemic problem?’
