12 Sep 2024Happening On 22/11/2024We are very sorry to announce that the FUAIM concert scheduled for this coming Friday by Iranian santur player, Ramtin Nazarijou, will not go ahead as planned. We apologise sincerely for the short notice and for any disappointment or inconvenience caused by this - we very much share the disappointment!We do, however, have a wonderful band lined up to play at the same time this Friday and would like to extend a warm welcome to all to join us for a performance by original, eclectic, Cork-based ensemble, Ás Veces - in the Aula Maxima or online on the Music at UCC livestream. 19 Sep 2024TRADITIONAL ARTIST IN RESIDENCE AT UCC
The Arts Council and University College Cork invite applications from traditional artists of distinction for the role of Traditional Artist in Residence at UCC for the calendar year 2025.
The Traditional Artist in Residence, based in the Department of Music, is designed to provide a traditional artist (traditional musician, singer, dancer, story-teller or practitioner of the oral arts such as agallamh beirte and lúibíní) with a unique opportunity to develop their practice in a university environment while offering students the opportunity to engage with a practising artist in a meaningful way during the course of their studies.

17 Sep 2024FUAIM Music at UCC is delighted to welcome back colleagues and students to the new academic year with news of our Autumn 2024 season of Friday lunchtime concerts, FUAIM Lectures, and events in the Departments of Theatre and Film & Screen Media.
The Friday lunchtime concert series begins on Friday 27th September with a performance by the brilliant Rasa Nua, back by popular demand and featuring UCC's own Dara O'Brien with a programme of contemporary, Indian, klezmer and new world music.

12 Sep 2024Happening On 27/09/2024Rasa Nua are a Cork-based ‘world music’ ensemble: Jorge Kachmari (clarinet, saxophone), Dara O'Brien (sitar, guitar), Pat Allot (percussion) and Tim O’Leary (double bass). Their sound is rich and varied, drawing from their collective backgrounds in Indian classical music, jazz, blues, Klezmer and contemporary music. With original compositions, fluid interactive dialogue and palpable chemistry, Rasa Nua provide a new flavour of music - engaging, exploratory and fresh.

Abstract:
The new gender norms for Bengali women were created by political, religious, and cultural encounters between British colonial mechanisms and the nationalist collective struggle to reconstruct the traditions of the Indian subcontinent. In between those colonial and nationalist binary narratives, one of the most popular folk song genres of Bengalis, Bhawaiya, has existed with sexually subversive emotional elements.
