FUAIM Lecture: From MINdDS to miniMINdDS: Considering the role of Music as an Intervention in the Neurological development of Children with Down Syndrome. Ó Riada Hall, 11:00
Eva is a musicologist in the Department of Music UCC with a particular interest in the neuroscience of music, specifically music and the brain. This focus coalesces with Eva’s passion for music in early years education and how it can impact on the neurological development of children of all abilities.
Over the last number of years, Eva has worked very closely with Down Syndrome Cork and Down Syndrome Ireland supporting their work with children with Down Syndrome. This active research led to the creation of MINdDS, a collaborative research project between the Department of Music, the School of Applied Psychology, and the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience at UCC. This, in turn, led to a follow-on project entitled miniMINdDS in collaboration with Dr. Pauline Frizelle of the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences (UCC).
Within this lecture, Eva, will explore the elemental components of the interventions used in both projects, while considering their function in both educative and therapeutic spheres. The measures used to access the impact of music on the neurological development of this cohort will be discussed with the increasing role of a neural educative model to enhance accessibility to music in a neurodiverse population will be considered.
