EDI Data Collection and Monitoring

Scope, Partners, and Collaborators

Data collection from staff and students is crucial for informing the University's work in the areas of Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI). University College Cork strives to gain a better picture of our increasingly diverse community of staff and students.

The EDI Unit and our data partners, such as the Human Resources Information System (HRIS) Team, IT Services and Data Hub Team, and the Academic Systems Administration Team, take every precaution to ensure that the information provided by members of the University community remains anonymous and confidential. We seek approval from the Social Research Ethics Committee and the Office of Corporate and Legal Affairs before collecting most of the equality data from staff and students.

We publish data in an aggregated form only, ensuring that we do not disclose data with small numbers that could potentially identify individuals. For transparency, we present and circulate the EDI-based Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and reports from consultations.

The infographic below outlines the main UCC EDI data collection and monitoring projects, as well as the partners and stakeholders who assist us in achieving our goals.

Equal Status Acts 2000-2018 - Grounds of Discrimination

Visual of nine grounds of discrimination

The Equal Status Acts 2000-2018 (‘the Acts’) prohibit discrimination in the provision of goods and services, accommodation and education. They cover the nine grounds:

  1. Age
  2. Disability
  3. Family Status
  4. Gender
  5. Marital Status
  6. Membership of the Traveller Community
  7. Race
  8. Religion
  9. Sexual Orientation

Visit Understanding the Equal Grounds for more details.

Additionally, EDI Literacy Glossary provides further overview of some of the main terms.

EDI Data is a key part of understanding where there is disadvantage and under-representation. Having diversity data collected and analysed across the grounds of discrimination will enable us to devise targeted measures to address and mitigate disadvantage where it exists.

Currently, there are significant gaps in the diversity data in our university.

We are all responsible to assist the University as our employer in filing in these gaps. Individually, and being part of our local communities such as Department/School/Unit or staff/student networks.

You can help us today by reflecting on and taking some of the action today.
