About the Initiative

What is the Cork Folklore Project?

The Cork Folklore Project (CFP) was founded in 1996 and is a non-profit community based organisation, who partners with the Department of Folklore and Ethnology, UCC and the Northside Community Enterprises.

What do we do?

We digitally record stories and memories from the people of Cork. To date we have collected over 900 hours of recordings on a range of subjects from stonemasons, hurling, social change, industry, road bowling, everyday life in the past and present and are recognised nationally and internationally for our high standard of folklore collection & dissemination

What is the CFP Outreach Hub?

Our Outreach Hub is aimed at offering a public space for the people of Cork and visitors to the city to engage with the project and our collection.  Our Memory Wall and Memory Map will showcase samples of our collected audio material. You can also play our unique Who Wants to Be a Millionaire styled folklore game and find out about our broad collection, archiving and research work.

CFP opens its collection to the public by appointment. We are restricted by resources but make every effort to accommodate the public who want to research our material. We have an active outreach programme which aims to engage the people of Cork in our collection in a variety of innovative ways. We also publish an annual journal, which explores themes from within our collection, as well as contributions from historians and folklorists.
