Top students receive Eli Lilly awards
The annual Eli Lilly undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships for academic excellence were recently presented to students from this School at an event hosted by the UCC Biochemistry and Biotechnology Society on 2nd March last.
The top students in Biotechnology and Biochemistry were recognised for their achievement at the Eli Lilly Awards evening in the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology at University College Cork. Noel Henderson, Personnel Representative, Eli Lilly presented the awards to the students. Marion Burgess graduated at the top of the Masters in Biotechnology class and received the Eli Lilly Postgraduate Scholarship in Biotechnology. Marion, a student from Saint Mary’s Secondary School in Mallow, graduated with an honours degree in Chemistry of Pharmaceutical Compounds (including placement at Janssen Biologics) at UCC. She then completed the Masters in Biotechnology at UCC, which included placement as a Quality Control Analyst at Biomarin where she continues to work.
Shannon Quilty and Linda Murphy were the top second and third year undergraduate students in Biochemistry and received the Eli Lilly Award for Academic Excellence in Biochemistry respectively. Shannon and Linda are top students from St. Augustine’s College, Dungarvan and Scoil Mhuire, Cork, respectively and have continued to excel at UCC, where they are recognised as College Scholars.
Professor Tommie McCarthy, Director of the Masters Programme in Biotechnology praised the students for their outstanding performance and complimented Eli Lilly for both the sponsorship of the awards which recognise student excellence and their support of Biotechnology at UCC.

Following the awards presentation, Sarah McCarthy, QC Analyst at Eli Lilly and former BSc in Biochemistry / MSc in Biotechnology student at UCC, gave a presentation on ‘Landing a job in Eli Lilly….my journey’ and Dr Conor Horgan spoke about his role in Eli Lilly as an Analytical Scientist. Conor completed both his BSc and PhD in the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology and worked as a post-doctoral scientist in the Molecular Cell Biology laboratory for five years prior to his present role at Eli Lilly.
