Cancer research within the School of Biochemistry and Cell biology involves fundamental and translational research. The aim of cancer researchers in the School is to increase our understanding of the cellular and molecular biology of cancer and to translate these findings into new cancer biomarkers for cancer prevention, early detection, and novel therapeutic strategies for cancer. 

Our research focuses on adult cancers such as breast and ovarian cancer, as well as childhood cancers such as leukaemia. Our main research themes are growth factors, cell-signalling, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), genomic instability, transcriptional deregulation, immune-mediated suppression of cancer, biomarker and target discovery and validation. We use a range of experimental techniques to examine these crucial mechanisms in tumorigenesis, including advanced CRISPR-engineered cell lines, microscopy, genetics, RNA sequencing, proteomics and work with patient samples.
