Johnson and Johnson Careers Event
A careers event held by Johnson and Johnson was collaboratively organised between the UCC Biochemistry & Biotechnology society and WiSTEM society. The careers workshop was presented by personnel from Johnson & Johnson.
A variety of speakers from different sectors of the Johnson and Johnson company discussed their experiences working in this industry, and also, small group work focussed on the preparation of CV's and interview tips. The event was planned so that the group work was interspersed between the speakers. This allowed the evening to flow nicely from one section to the next, allowing time for those in attendance to have their questions answered.
The first of the speakers was Claire Walsh. She works as a Senior in MPS Operations. She spoke about how she had worked at Johnson & Johnson for placement as a student and later returned after graduation to work. She spoke about her job as an operation technician, working as the first line of defence to troubleshoot problems as soon as they occur. She also spoke about the range of projects she is involved with which aim to improve Global Standardization.
The second speaker was Fiona O’Keefe who works as part of the Engineering Department. She joined the company as part of the graduate program. She spoke about the application process for this, as well as her experiences since joining the program. She works as a process engineer and spoke about some of the project work she’s done, which involved increasing the capacity of the area she was working, as well as bringing in new systems.
The final speaker was Claire Crowley, who was also part of the graduate program. Claire was working in the Quality Control labs, which test the product before market. She gave advice in regard to applying for graduate programs and encouraged those in attendance to apply for as many opportunities as possible and to keep an open mind.
The evening concluded with a chance for anyone who had further questions to have them answered by the representatives from Johnson & Johnson.
WiSTEM is a society founded in August 2018, our aim is to support women in UCC in achieving their full potential in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
UCC Biochemistry and Biotechnology Society was founded in 2006 with the aim of organising educational and sociable events for the students in the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology. Speakers from all backgrounds in industry are invited to the college, to give insight into the roles they play, as well as additional speakers for current research topics.
