A report of the day of science in the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology as experienced by one of the TY students, Sam Hernan. Thank you for your article, Sam!

On Tuesday 1st of November, the Biochemistry & Biotechnology society held a summer placement information seminar.

The Professor Art Champlin Gold Medal Award for academic excellence in Biochemistry, was presented to Donagh Gribbon by Professor John O’Halloran, President, UCC, and Professor Justin McCarthy, Head of School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, UCC on the 26th October 2022.

The BSc Biochemistry, BSc Biotechnology and BSc Genetics conferring ceremony was held on 26 October 2022.

The joint UCC-MTU conferring ceremony for the BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science class was held in UCC on Friday 14 October.

Dr Patrick Leonard together with his wife Glenda, and twin sister Sr Emmanuel, returned after 66 years after his graduation to visit the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology on Tuesday 11 October. 

We are delighted to welcome Dr Pedro Tetteroo to the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology as an Adjunct Professor.

The Biophysics and Bioanalysis has successfully advanced its research projects, particularly the SFI and IPIC (Irish Photonics Integration Research Centre) projects in the area of Biophotonics and sensors.

Traditional laboratory classes in science subjects require mobility, the use of both hands, fine motor control and good eyesight. This makes it very challenging for students with physical disabilities or visual impairments to complete practical classes. In fact, it may put such students off choosing STEM subjects in university in the first place.

We are delighted to welcome two new Academic staff, Dr Katja Burk and Dr Martina Yordanova to the School of Biochemistry and Cell Biology both of whom have been appointed as Lecturers.
