Practice teaching

Practice teaching is a dynamic CPD learning experience where social work students bring skills and energy to your team, and are ready to make a positive contribution to social work practice with your guidance. UCC would like to hear from social workers (min. 2 years post-qualification) who are interested in supervising a student on placement from September to December and/or January to April. Student placements are normally 14 weeks (500 hours).

Benefits of practice teaching:

  1. Contribute to the development of the profession of social work through the training and education of students.
  2. Access CPD opportunities.
  3. Gain significant hours towards meeting your CORU CPD requirements.
  4. Gain supervision experience.
  5. Gain access to UCC's libraries while your student is on placement.
  6. UCC pays a placement fee to practice teachers in most settings.
  7. Social workers who engage in practice teaching have continually informed us of the benefits they receive in terms of their own education and development.

It was a great experience having a student and I hope she got as much out of the placement as I did. I would definitely recommend taking on a student from UCC.

Ciara Vance, Social Worker

I just wanted to share how grateful I am that you showed up and provided my daughter an experience of a lifetime. Her interaction with your team meant the world to our family.

Anonymous - service user quote on impact of student on placement

I learned so much from my last student, her academic knowledge along with the energy she brought opened my eyes to the two-way learning that occurs when a student is on placement.

Elaine O'Brien, Social Work Team Leader
