UCC Trio Inducted into Irish Hockey Hall of Fame

Ireland’s recent 2025 Hockey Ireland Hall of Fame induction ceremony celebrated the remarkable careers of 18 outstanding athletes, including three standout UCC alumni who also captained the Irish women’s team: Mary LogueSarah Kelleher, and Rachael Kohler.

Mary Logue earned an exceptional 153 senior caps between 1989–2004 and became the first Irish woman to reach 100 international caps, accomplishing this milestone against Spain in Dublin in 1997. A commanding presence for Ireland, she led the national team at the 1989 Intercontinental Cup in New Delhi and was integral to the 1994 World Cup held in Dublin. Post-retirement, Logue turned to coaching—guiding UCD to a Senior Cup win and working with Ireland’s U18 side—while continuing to coach the Irish Women’s O55 Masters team, all alongside her academic career and passion for golf. Sarah Kelleher amassed over 120 caps (1991–1999), captaining Ireland from 1992 to 1995 and leading the squad at the 1994 World Cup in Dublin. Renowned for her leadership, speed, and stick skill, she played domestically for Cork Harlequins, UCC, and Muckross before moving to England, where she achieved multiple titles with Slough. After retiring, Kelleher transitioned into coaching at England U18 level and launched a business consulting venture, cementing her status as a respected figure in hockey. Rachael Kohler, Ireland’s most‑capped female player at her retirement with 166 caps from 1993–2003, captained the national team from 2001, steering them to a memorable sixth-place finish at the 2003 European Championship. She featured in two World Cups (1994, 2002) and three European Championships, and at club level, she captained Cork Harlequins to the Irish Senior Cup in 2000. Famed for her endurance, consistent midfield performances, and powerful leadership, Kohler remains a lasting ambassador for Irish and Munster hockey. Most recently, she served as assistant coach for the UCC EYHL team, continuing to give back to the sport and support the next generation of players at UCC.
