UCC Division 2 side played in the Munster Senior Cup on Saturday 18th against Division 1 side Church of Ireland in Garryduff.
Coach, Mark Mulcahy, was very much looking forward to the challenge and the opportunity to play a higher division side. The Division 2 side have dominated the Division 2 league with a 12 point lead on 2nd place Blackrock. C of I are mid table in Division 1 and were going into this match as favourites.
C of I got off the mark quickly with an early goal. UCC battled on and a goal from Amy Nangle helped to equalise. It would only take one more goal to win this match as both sides struggled to find the net again. With a few minutes to go in the final quarter, Alex Kenny made a good attacking run and passed to Isabelle Martin, who rarely misses. Martin took a good strike and UCC won the game 1-2.
They look forward to the semi finals (22/23 February) with opposition still to be decided. Crescent, Cork Harlequins and Bandon also advanced to the semi final stage.
The Division 2 side finished off their weekend with a league game against Ashton on Sunday. With a game in their legs it took the student side time to find their scoring run. Goals from Emma Nolan and Sophia O Shea ensured another league win. This Saturday the UCC side look forward to meeting Pembroke Wanderers in the next round of the Irish Junior Cup. Tip off 1pm
The Division 3 side travelled to Clonmel for the semi finals of the Munster Div 3&4 Combined Cup. The side already had a tough league battle against Clonmel so knew it was not going to be easy. They were also missing their usual keeper which made things less than ideal. 2 disallowed goals for UCC and finishing 1-1 at full time, the game went to shuttles. Unfortunately the team lost on shuttles and came home very disappointed. Also one of their players was badly injured during the game, highlighting the potential dangers of the game. The team have a free weekend but look forward to the remainder of the league and hoping for a good run in the Division 3 cup.
Division 4 had a rest last weekend but get back on to the pitch this Sunday, when they take on Blackrock at home, tip off 12pm. With a game in hand this team top the league so every game matters from here on in.
The men's side play C of I C this Thursday evening at 8.15pm. Their last encounter against this team was close, so the students are hoping for another close battle and maybe a win to give them their first points of the season.
UCC indoor squad play in the semi finals of the women's Munster Indoor Competition this Sunday in Kinsale. Winning this tournament would ensure another opportunity to qualify for the All Ireland Indoor Championships. Watch this space !
Good luck to all the teams this weekend.
