UCC Hockey Club - Weekend Round-Up
EYHL2 – Division 1 Women
Last weekend saw the first defeat of the season for the Division 1 women as they travelled to Dublin to take on Monkstown in the EYHL2 League. After a dominant 6–1 victory over Lisnagarvey and a strong win against Belfast Harlequins, UCC were hoping to extend their run of form.
UCC started brightly and took an early lead through a well‑worked penalty corner finished by Micaela Sanderson. The visitors came out of the blocks with real intent, but as the high‑paced game wore on, the team lost some of their earlier structure and struggled to generate enough corners to add to the scoreline.
A key difference in the match was the influence of World Cup silver medallist Chloe Watkins, whose control and experience helped Monkstown shift the momentum. Despite the setback, the squad remains in a strong position heading into the next fixtures.
Division 2 Women
The Division 2 side enjoyed a weekend off, recovering from their outstanding 7–0 win in the Examiner Cup the previous week.
The Examiner Cup is a senior competition, and for the Division 2 squad to defeat a Division 1 team by such a margin is a significant statement of the club’s strength and depth this season.
Division 3 Weekend Cup Action
Division 3A
The 3A group played their cup match on Friday evening against Bandon, securing an impressive 3–1 win.
With Bandon travelling with a 12‑player panel and UCC fielding 18, the depth told as the game progressed. Bandon showed great fight, giving the match a real cup feel throughout.
This result follows on from the previous weekend’s 3–0 away victory over Tipperary. With several league games remaining—and Limerick dropping valuable points—UCC 3A are firmly in the hunt for the league title.
Division 3B
The 3B team faced Cork Harlequins in their Sunday cup fixture. Quins opened the scoring, but Aisling Sexton netted her first goal of the season to bring UCC level.
Quins went ahead again in the second half, but with just five minutes remaining Gina McSweeney scored a crucial equaliser, sending the match to a shoot‑out.
Despite a strong effort, UCC narrowly lost 4–3 in the shoot‑out. This follows a tight 1–0 league loss to Ashton the previous weekend. The squad sits second from bottom and will be targeting a couple of key wins to secure their league status.
Division 2 Men
The men’s side had no match this weekend but previously played C of I D in the McClean Cup, winning a thrilling 7–4 goal‑fest. The group moves forward with momentum and confidence.
Division 7 Women
The Division 7 squad played their cup game against Ashton and delivered a dominant 7–0 win. Having beaten Ashton 3–1 the previous weekend, confidence is high and the atmosphere within the squad is excellent.
