Hockey Camp

Hockey updates for the week.

The weekend games began with Division 3 playing in their first round of the Division 3 Munster Cup against visitors Bandon Hockey Club at the Mardyke. Kirsten Browne scored in the early stages of the game to give UCC the lead. It was a hard fought game on both sides with the Bandon keeper pulling off some good saves throughout. At the end of the 3rd Quarter UCC scored from a corner through Sarah Bryce. The students confirmed their win with another goal in the final quarter from Jill Shanahan. Final score 3-0. With Waterford, C of I, Cork Wanderers and UCC it will be interesting to see the semi final pairings due to be played on the 9th and 10th March.

Match Results

Last weekend saw UCC Division 1 take on Loreto in the Irish Senior Cup at the Mardyke. Loreto are top of the EYHL Division 1 and the students were looking forward to taking on the challenge of top class opposition.

UCC got off to a flying start with Jane Murphy slotting a goal home in the first couple of minutes. However Loreto replied with an equaliser minutes later. It was another 50 minutes before the next goal came in Q3. Loreto scored 2 in this quarter, doing their most damage in the game. The College side played a good game and had their chances but a final score 1-3 put the students out of the competition. Although losing the game, UCC will take some consolation away with them knowing they are not too far away from what's needed to play at the top level of national league hockey.

The senior game was followed by UCC playing Old Alex in the Irish Junior Cup at the Mardyke. UCC scored in the opening quarter with a goal from Alex Kenny and maintained that lead into half time. The students were the better side but needed another goal to secure their lead with breaks from Old Alex on the cards. Their second goal didn't come until the 4th quarter with a goal from Feena O Leary. The home side did enough winning 2-0 and look forward to their quarter final home draw against Pegasus on the 2nd March.

Division 5 played their Munster Cup game against Clonakilty away on Sunday. The UCC side were hot favourites as they top the Division 5 league. They got off to a slow start with the Clon side scoring 2 goals in the opening quarter. The students were chasing the game from this point. It went to 3-0 but UCC never gave up, getting one back, 3-1. Clon scored one more goal and at 4-1 looked like there was no way back for the students. But 2 quick goals brought the score to 4-3 with a glimmer of hope for the college side to get the draw. However the clock ran out for them and Clonakilty won the game and through to the next round.

Weekend Fixtures

This weekend sees Division 1 playing visitors Lurgan at 12pm in the EYHL2 on Saturday. This will be their first time playing each other and UCC will be hoping for a 4 out 4 win in the EYHL2 so far.

Division 2 have a weekend off while Division 3 and 5 both travel to the County of Waterford on Sunday to play in the Munster League. Division 3 play Waterford away again this year. Their last game was a 2-0 win for the student side so they will be hoping for a similar result on their return. The Division 5 team travel to the grit pitch in Dungarvan. This will be a challenge to play on for the students. A win here will ensure promotion to Division 4 but at this stage of the league anything can happen.

Good luck to all the teams this weekend.

New Partnerships

UCC Hockey would also like to announce 3 new partnerships with the club. Ronan Daly Jermyn, Grant Thornton and Cahalane Coaches have come on board as sponsors for the Pre Match Lunch on the 9th March. We would like to thank them for their support and look forward to working with them in the coming months. To support this fundraising event and attend you can buy tickets here

UCC Hockey Camp

It was midterm for the secondary school kids this week. UCC Hockey took advantage of this and held a 2 day camp for 3rd/4th year students. The Division 1 players were out in force coaching the 30 attendees. Thanks to all who supported this camp and to the players who coached. A big thank you to So Hockey who sponsored hockey balls for all who attended.
