UCC Division 1 Big Win vs Lurgan

19 Feb 2024
It was a busy weekend with all 4 teams in action.

The Division 1 side played Lurgan for the first time in the EYHL2 in the Mardyke. It was a crucial game for the student side to maintain their 100% victory record with Phil Byrne in charge on the sidelines. It took UCC the first couple of quarters to settle into the game. On the stroke of half time Abi O Mahony scored from a direct shot from a penalty corner. HT 1-0

In the third quarter Emma O Sulllivan scored a cracker of a shot from play and the students grew in confidence following up with another goal from Sarah Murphy. In the 4th quarter Zahra Lowry scored 2 goals to bring the final tally to 5-0. UCC begin the 2nd half of the EYHL2 league with a home game against Ards next Saturday.

The Division 2 side played in the Munster Cup on Saturday against Belvedere in Ballincollig. Goals came from Anna Collins, Isobel Kingston and Alex Kenny. The 2nds have had a great season so far lying in 2nd place in the Munster League behind a very strong Catholic Institute. UCC proceed to the semi finals of the Munster Cup and are still alive in the Irish Junior Cup playing Pegasus at home in the quarter finals on the 2nd March.

Division 3 travelled to Waterford for the second time this year in the Munster Senior League. Due to a conceded match last year, the college side were fined and the fixture was reversed and carried through to this season. The Cork girls didn't hold back and came away with a 7-1 victory with a hat trick from Sarah Bryce and goals from Kirsten Browne, Laura Barr, Eve O Shea and Anna McGoey. This team are a creditable 4th (game in hand) in the Munster League and are in the semi final of the Munster Cup, playing Waterford in the Mardyke 9th/10th March.

Division 5 were playing on the grit in Dungarvan in the Munster League on Sunday. A win would guarantee a top 2 finish and promotion to Division 4. Unfortunately the student side couldn't get to grips with the pitch, one of the last grit pitches in the country and the type of surface generally last played on in 1990s. They went down to a tough Dungarvan side who won 2-0. UCC have 3 games left, against league leaders Crescent, Bandon and Clonakilty. All to play for !
