Treble Triumph for UCC Hockey

Triple Triumph for UCC Hockey as Women’s Teams Seal Munster and Examiner Cup Glory

It was a weekend to remember for UCC Hockey as both the Women’s Division 2 and Division 3 teams claimed Munster Cup final victories, capping off an outstanding season for the club.

The Division 2 team got the action underway in style on Saturday, taking on Ashton in the final. They wasted no time in asserting dominance, scoring early and heading into half-time with a commanding 5-1 lead. One more goal in the second half sealed an emphatic 6-1 win, securing a historic league and cup double—the first ever for a UCC Division 2 side. The achievement also reinforces the recognition of Mark Mulcahy, recently named UCC Sports Coach of the Year, proving his impact on the squad this season.

And the celebrations didn’t stop there. On Sunday, the Division 2 side returned to action for the Examiner Cup final against Crescent—a Division 1 competition—where they delivered once again in a cracker of a game. In a tense, tightly contested match, it was Suzie Uniacke Lowe who broke the deadlock in the third quarter, finishing from a penalty corner. At the other end, goalkeeper Faye Luby pulled off a series of crucial saves through out the game, with the entire squad digging deep to see out the win. The result saw the Division 2 side complete an incredible treble, finishing their season on a high and lifting a cup that holds extra prestige as a Division 1 prize—one to truly treasure for the student squad.

Following the Division 2 triumph on Saturday, the Division 3 side stepped up against a tough Bandon outfit. Donning their white away strip, UCC struck first through Sarah Bryce and maintained the upper hand for most of the match. Bandon fought back to equalize, setting up a tense finish, but UCC showed their composure and scored in the final minutes to clinch a deserved victory and retain the Division 3 Cup. The win holds historic significance, echoing back to 1973 and 1974—the last time UCC won back-to-back titles at this level.

While promotion to Division 2 narrowly slipped through their fingers, the Division 3 team still secured a second-place league finish and a cup triumph, marking a hugely successful season under the guidance of student coach Jim White, whose debut coaching year has been nothing short of a revelation.

UCC Hockey continues to go from strength to strength—and this triple cup success is a testament to the talent, teamwork, and determination within the club.
