Welcome to GREEN-TRIALS
Despite growing awareness of the environmental impact of healthcare and research activities, sustainability considerations remain insufficiently integrated into the education and training of clinical trial professionals. Clinical trials can generate a significant environmental footprint through travel, energy consumption, resource use, data management infrastructure, and the production of medical and logistical waste. However, knowledge and practical guidance on how to design and conduct greener, more sustainable clinical studies are still fragmented and inconsistently addressed across existing training programmes.
Designing and conducting clinical trials is already a complex task, and investigators require appropriate training to perform their roles effectively. While educational programmes in clinical research methodology exist, there is currently limited structured training that systematically connects clinical trial education with sustainability principles, environmental responsibility, and strategies for reducing the carbon footprint of clinical research.
This highlights the need for harmonised educational approaches that bridge clinical trial methodology with sustainability-focused practices. By linking these domains, future researchers and healthcare professionals can be better prepared to design, implement, and manage clinical trials that maintain scientific rigour while minimising environmental impact and supporting the broader goals of sustainable healthcare systems.
An online, open‑access curriculum designed for postgraduate students in medical, pharmacy, biomedical, and health sciences. It provides practical skills to integrate sustainability principles into the design, conduct, and reporting of clinical trials, reducing environmental impact while supporting digital, decentralised, and regulatory‑compliant approaches.
Learning Management System
The GREEN‑TRIALS Learning Management System (LMS) supports interactive and collaborative learning through discussion boards, assignments, assessments, surveys, and workshops, with tools to track progress, participation, and learning outcomes for both students and teachers.
Teacher Guides
The teacher’s guide supports educators in delivering the GREEN‑TRIALS curriculum, even without prior expertise in sustainability and clinical trials. It provides structured guidance, modern teaching methodologies, and multilingual resources to ensure high‑quality, innovative, and consistent implementation across institutions.
Translation to Four Languages
All educational and training materials are available in five languages: English, French, German, Portuguese, and Czech. This multilingual approach enhances accessibility, inclusion, and transferability, supporting equal opportunities in clinical trials education across diverse cultural and linguistic contexts.
Pilot Course & Workshops
Practical pilot courses designed for postgraduate students in medical, pharmacy, biomedical, and health sciences, and workshops designed for professionals working in clinical trials. Through hands‑on learning, participants gain applied knowledge on implementing sustainability principles effectively in real‑world clinical trial settings.
Educator Training Course
A dedicated training course to build educators’ capacity to deliver the GREEN‑TRIALS curriculum with confidence and quality. It promotes innovative teaching methods and ensures consistent, high‑standard education even where prior experience in sustainable clinical trials is limited.
